The Precious Places Community History Project is a community oral history project inviting members of the Philadelphia region's many neighborhoods to document the buildings, public spaces, parks, landmarks and other sites that hold the memories of our communities and define where we live. Precious Places teaches the video production process to participating groups, fostering projects authored by those who intimately know the featured neighborhoods.

Film Summary:

Tindley Temple United Methodist Church is the Reverend Charles Albert Tindley's legacy.  Tindley Temple is about his commitment, love, and perseverance.  This church became a sanctuary in the South/Central Community of Philadelphia for many African Americans who migrated from places outside of Philadelphia seeking opportunity for themselves and their families. Reverend Charles (Chas.) Albert Tindley’s story evolves from a humble beginning as a sexton at the John Wesley Methodist Episcopal Church located at 728-732 Bainbridge Street to become the pastor of a church later named for him located at 750-762 South Broad Street. The Tindley Temple story will journey through the many experiences that Reverend Tindley had prior to and while pastoring at Tindley Temple and will include several main stories. It will revolve around Reverend Tindley’s modest beginnings and educational achievements, his ministries, and the church’s moves, decision making, and resulting actions, through troubling times to triumphs. The narrative will be told from several in-person interviews with long-standing members, some still currently active, and archival materials both visual and auditory.
