In the United States, 1 in 5 people suffer from mental illness at one point in their life and another 7.5 million people are mentally retarded. Until the 1970's, many of those with the greatest needs were housed in government institutions. But when those institutions were slowly closed due to either inhumane conditions or new governmental funding priorities, many found themselves in living in group homes or with their loving, but often ill-equipped families (00:15:00). What's the skinny on black women's health? More than two-thirds of black women are overweight or obese, increasing their risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some cancers. Black women also have a much higher chance of dying from heart disease, high blood pressure, and cancer than white women. Through its clever mixture of dramatic segments and interviews with women from the Project, Herstory: The Philadelphia Black Women's Health Project successfully ignites discussion about health issues of particular concern for black women including breast cancer, prenatal care, stress and cardiovascular disease (00:12:00). The United Hands Community Land Trust was a multi-racial homeownership organization in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. The Trust was committed to ensuring permanent, affordable, quality housing primarily for low-income people of color. Today the term "blight" is thrown around a good deal by developers and government entities eager to implement eminent domain, but this video unflinchingly examines a hostile, truly blighted urban environment in which people of color are isolated...and then shows how transformation takes place when people are given the support and opportunities to create their own luck, vision, and a place they can call their own (00:13:00). A youth group from Woodrock, Inc. created this video to explore and document the high rate of school drop-outs among their peers.
